TJC prevents Shavuot Hike and Torah at Spooner Lake

Shavuot @ Spooner 2024:  A Modern Pilgrimage

As we embrace Shavuot this year, we are experiencing this pilgrimage festival in a way special to our Mountain Judaism here in our Tahoe Jewish Community.  We’ll join together from around our region to turn our eyes to the mountains.  Psalms 121 teaches:  I lift my eyes to the mountains; so as we collectively lift our eyes, we’ll hear words of Torah chanted from one of our backpacking Torahs in the setting of our Gem of Creation – Tahoe, we’ll walk through the forest of Spooner Lake State Park, we’ll learn Torah together, and we’ll enjoy a dairy potluck.  A pilgrimage occurs when one wanders in the wilderness.  However, this wandering has a purpose, a spiritual destination.  As you prepare to join us, consider how you can engage with the idea of pilgrimage.  What are we communally journeying towards?  What are we leaving behind?  What will we experience on this year’s Shavuot pilgrimage?

Our membership takes great pride in living this role for our community and to share Judaism with the wider community as well as our many visitors. Our congregation thrives through the generous support of Jewish tourists inspired by their visit, by partnership with other congregations to host retreat and other shared programs in Tahoe and with your support.
