Shabbat School Questions and Answers 

On June 5, TBY held its annual Shabbatuation for all Hebrew & Shabbat School students.  All of the students took part in leading the Shabbat morning services.  In preparation for the morning’s presentation, Alexis Wagner, one of the teachers asked the students to answer the following questions.  These questions, along with their answers, gave us insight in what they learned throughout the year.  This makes it clear to all, how important Shabbat school really is, and most importantly, they enjoy learning!

 

1)  Are you Jewish?  

A resounding “ yes  “

Yeah, I are Jewish

2)  What does it mean to be Jewish?

It means to believe in one god and to follow the ways of the Torah

To learn the torah and the prayers

To have my Bar Mitzvah

It is special

It means you get to read the torah and you learn about Moses, G-d and other things

It means to learn Torah

We eat challah, play legos all the time

Juice is for being Jewish

You are different

It means being nice to each other

We love G-d

We follow rules god gave us; discuss & think about things

We are part of an ancient civilization

Different than other people

We believe in G-d

It means that I believe in G-d / Adonai

3)  How can you let other people know about  being Jewish

Wear a star of David around your neck in public and be proud to be Jewish

Tell them

Tell them about Judaism

They can play Legos with me.  They can wear a kippah

You can learn another language and culture

The holidays

You should light candles on Friday night

We can invite them to our temple

That we light Shabbat candles

You can tell them about Moses, god and the torah

You can explain with songs & stories about holidays, rituals & actions

4)  What did you learn this year in Shabbat School?

Shavuot is the cheesecake holiday

I learned about different prayers and what they mean.  

I learned a different language

Songs & prayers

Pam teach me a whole lot

I learned about G-d

Letters, words and prayers

Learned about the ten commandments

I learned about Passover and Hanukkah

A lot of different stuff

Prayers

I learned about the Torah, Moses, god and the Jewish alphabet

We learned to analyze & discuss deeper into the readings

5)  Is there anything you would have liked to learn about that was not taught?  What? 

I would have like to learn to speak Hebrew  for speaking

No, I learned lots of stuff

I want to learn how G-d made fire in the bushes to talk to the Jews

6)  What would you like to tell other people about TBY Shabbat school

The scenery is very lovely

It's fun, interesting & informative, with activities mixed in with lessons

How it is really fun!

Latkes - because they are good

8) What is your favorite Jewish holiday?  Why?

Sukkot- because building the sukkah is fun

Hanukkah, because it's fun

Rosh Hashanah because the challah looks very cool

My favorite jewish holiday is Passover, because it is fun and I like the food

I enjoy Passover, because it has yummy foods, fun & makes you stop and think

9)  What is your favorite Jewish ritual?  Why

Lighting the candles on Friday night because they are beautiful

My Bar Mitzvah - it felt great

10)  What is the most important thing about Shabbat services?  How do they make you feel?

Different ways, mostly relaxed

The prayers

I think the most important thing about shabbat services is the torah.  the services make me feel good

The music - it makes me feel happy

Torahmatics, because I get to learn something new

It's good be here

Doing prayers - it makes me feel happy

I think the prayers & torah reading is the most important - some prayers make me feel solemn & some joyous

Praying to god - it makes me feel happy

So we learn about god.  the services make me feel comfortable
